Choosing Ski Gloves – The 'How' Factor

Prior to your ski trip, it is important you get the right gear for yourselves. Gloves are an indispensable part of ski gear. Read on to find out how you can get the perfect ski gloves. Analyse the 'how' factor in ski gloves.

That you have the right gear is essential for enjoying skiing to the hilt. Gloves are a key component of the ski gear, and you will do yourselves a favour identifying the right pair of gloves. Take your time and test multiple brands before deciding on one.

To ensure that your ski gloves perform well, put them across a volley of questions:

* are they waterproof?
* are they windproof?
* is material used breathable?
* does the inner lining wick water?
* are the seams double-stitched and sealed

The first three points are understandable by themselves, so let us move on to the fourth. Wicking is the quality of the material of drawing moisture away from the skin. It is the key standard feature of performance fabrics today.

Unsealed seams let in wind and water to the discomfort of the skier. Single-stitch construction can be taken if you only want the gloves to last a season or two. But, for longer life, buy gloves with double or triple stitching.

Optional Features

Basic features apart, there are certain optional features as well that make the gloves in certain conditions.

* reinforced palm and fingertips
* nose wipe
* lens squeegee

Palm and fingertips are the areas likely to face a big chunk of abrasion. Reinforced material in these areas can extend the life of gloves apart from providing better protection against sharp edges.

Nose wipe is a patch of absorbent material on the thumb. When standing in lift lines on a cold day, it can save the skier untold embarrassment.

Lens squeegees are a useful feature if you intend to ski in bad weather. It is a rubber blade on the outside of the glove’s forefinger that can be used to clear snow and rain from goggle lenses.

Making A Choice

Choose ski gloves that balance comfort and warmth while catering to your individual needs. A good pair of gloves will prevent your hands from becoming damp and chapped, and protect them during a fall. Identify the features the gloves offer and concur them with your requirements. Pick up the one that fits in. A bit of extra time will pay handsome dividends.
Material Monition

You can pick up ski gloves in nylon, leather, Gore Tex and Kevlar. Whatever you choose, just make sure that the design allows you to grip your poles easily. Fine points of these materials will help you take a decision:

* Nylon ski gloves are breathable, making them comfortable to use. These gloves provide basic protection.
* Leather gloves are flexible and comfortable, but require regular maintenance to avoid getting hard.
* Gore-Tex gloves are breathable and durable that can brace the nastiest weather. These are great for wind and water resistance.
* For skiers attempting off-road trails, Kevlar ski gloves are perfect. These are inherently designed for harsh mountain terrain.

Insulation Factor

Seasoned skiers prefer ski gloves with a waterproof shell made of breathable material and liners underneath. The design gives the skier the option of skiing in either just the shell or the liner if conditions are warm. These gloves are easy-to-maintain as well, as you can simply pull the liner out and wash them, preserving the life of your ski gloves. Although fleece liners are most common, liners made of silk or synthetic materials are available as well.

Your skills in skiing notwithstanding, the quality of your gear is no less important. Be careful and meticulous while buying your ski gear, and ensure a fun-filled vacation.
