Since my workplace is quite far, I have to leave for work very early in the morning to compensate for the long drive. I want my morning routine to go smoothly so I try to set up many things on the night before. However, I am faced with the same dilemma of what to wear to work for the next day.
Every night, I pick out my outfit so that I can press it and make sure that it is ready to slip into the next day. My husband cannot believe the time I take on deciding what to wear. I explained that even though the dress code at our agency is business casual, I like to look professional when I am at the workplace.
I stopped by my husband's office to exchange vehicles with him about two weeks ago. I could not believe the way most of the workers were dressed in his workplace. Most of the workers I saw were in jeans, although they also have a business casual dress code.
It was obvious that not very many of the people in that workplace spent anytime planning what to wear. Even the director wears jeans and flannel shirts in the winter and t-shirts in the summer, so the rest of the workers follow suit.
My husband works at a social service agency that visits into people's homes, schools and the courtroom. He always dresses very well, but he is definitely in the minority. One of my husband's coworkers has been my friend for a long time. She told me that she liked working at the agency because she does not to have to worry about what to wear.
In the past, she dressed very well, wore make up and had every hair in place. However, things have changed when she worked at the agency. She now wears a pair of jeans and a shirt and does not bother with make up. Although I know that she had a good reputation, her casual attire makes her seem like she does not care about what type of job she is doing.
Many people are saying that the service delivery from the agency has declined since this director has taken over. Maybe the casual attitude that he has towards what to wear is also causing his staff to take too casual of an attitude towards their work. His being so casual about running a business is causing a poor reputation in the area.
Maybe I am just placing too much of an emphasis on what to wear. Nevertheless, I know that a person who looks and acts like a professional often gets treated with greater respect. People may not to take you seriously if you present a casual attitude through your appearance.
